Latino Film Festival - Poster

This is the final design for this poster for the film festival. I chose to have the white space at the top of this image as this will draw your eye to the information. The darker type helps to make the title stand out but then it subtly takes your eye down to the image with the change in colour.

I really think this poster dose what i wanted it to, representing the Latino culture with colour and energy and a celebratory feel.

I have tried out loads of different ways in which to sit the type over the image, but as the image is so bright and bold it has proven difficult to draw the attention to the information.

Using a coloured background box for the information so that it stands out more against the reds of the image.

I have used the white space in the image to sit the text on  but its not quite the impact i am going for

again using a coloured box to sit the text in, but reducing the opacity so that the image can still be seen.

using a white bounding box behind the text

moving the information to the bottom of the page in a yellow box so that it breaks up the image a bit more

creating more white space made this work better as it gives the type its own area to sit in

I started by trying to make this image a bit softer and a a bit warmer and less like a kids float in the street. 

I have started to play around with the distort tools in Photoshop and have come up with some really interesting results. Here i have polarised the image to give the circular shape and i think this is a great result. It almost reminds me of a camera lens and the reflections within it, but also it has the right feel and colours to it with the movement and energy of the circle.

This is another Distort effect that have a great result, the way the colours are all separated into these zig zag patters gives a real feel of a sizzling hot crowd.

The first image i have been developing as i think the colours are great in this particular photo and the shape of the pole and bunting create a nice layout shape that i could play with.

However after experimenting with this image for half a day, im not liking the results im getting, they don't look passionate or deep enough for the Latino Film Festival, they are showing more of a May Pole Summer garden party. So in the spirit of being quick i have decided to stop with this image and move on to the next.

For me Colour is so important in design, it can really make or break a design so i needed something that was warm and bright and shows energy. I already had these photos from a street festival and have decided to start with these and see what i can come up with as they have the right sort of approach i am wanting to use, but  i dont want to be using these untouched photos.

I really like this photo as it really says celebration to me but im not sure if im going to be able to use it as there is not a lot of big bold colour and the scaffolding in the background could be a problem

Latino Film Festival - Ideas

As i only have a week to do this project i need to make some snappy decisions early on so that i can make sure i finish this in time.

I want the identity of this poster to reflect the Latino culture rather than focusing more of the film festival side of this as it can be quite a generic look.

I think this is a good sum up of the feel and approach i want this to project to be, its going to be a distinctive identity that will be applied across other media such as t-shirts, street banners, newspaper adds, bus adds and posters.

Astronomy - Next Stages

OK so after realising that the design for the poster is properly not going to work I have decided to swap a few things around, im going to design a postcard for each of the constellations so that they can be on a larger scale and it will be easier to distinguish between them. So the poster is going to be for the solar system, having all the planets and their names on as this will give a stronger image when glowing in the dark on a kids wall.

here are a few developments that i have already made for the constellation postcards, I need them to be bolder so they stand out more when glowing but i dont want them to be to over the top and to big.

I chose the middle version which has larger points but with a subtle line still and so now i am applying the type to see where would be best and the size of it as this should not over power the constellation image.

Astronomy - Screen prints 2

I had another go at screen printing the constellation posters to see if i could get a better result. I decided that it could also depend on the stock that i am using weather they glow better, so i managed to get loads of printing down in the digital dungeons and so i have loads of testers that i can play around with.

I have had to try and organise the screen printing as much as i can, as i only have the one tub of ink and so i can't go crazy printing everything i find. So i have to be selective about the images I print and the stocks i print on to.

The results from today are much better than before, i can tell instantly that they are thicker inks because i can see them straight away after printing. I have left them to charge so hopefully i they will glow in the dark!

Astronomy - First screen prints

So i have finally managed to get into the print rooms and been able to screen print some samples for the postcards and posters with the glow in the dark paint. The hardest thing was that when i had printed them, i couldn't actually see the ink so i didn't know if it was right until it had dried.

After charging them in the studio i tried to get a dark room to see weather or not they would glow, but didn't have much luck with that.

The postcards that i had printed were very subtle but there was a faint glow in the dark line where you could see the circle on the front. But i think the ink needs to be a lot thicker in order for it to really glow.

But the Poster didn't glow at all, this design is quite delicate and so i don't think the ink is strong enough to make this design as crisp as i need it be to.

So for next time I'm going to try and get a thicker layer of ink through more runs on the screen and hopefully this should give them a higher chance of working.
